Endoscopy is a procedure useful in the diagnosis and treatment of various gastrointestinal and
related diseases. The Endoscope is inserted through the natural orifices of the body viz., mouth
& anus. The lumen of the gastrointestinal tract is illuminated by the light source at the distal end
of the tip of the endoscope and the magnified image is viewed on a television monitor.
DIAGNOSTIC ENDOSCOPY
Diagnostic endoscopy is to detect ulcer, cancer, cause for the pain,
vomiting, weight loss, diarrhoea, constipation and gastrointestinal bleeding.
THERAPEUTIC GI ENDOSCOPY
Endoscopic Surgeries can be performed to
removing the stone or blockage.
-
Remove food pipe obstruction caused by cancer by inserting an artificial tube.
-
To treat obstruction of the pancreatic duct and fluid collection around pancreas.
-
To remove early cancerous fleshy lesions (polyp).
This surgery is a better alternative to conventional surgery and is a great boon because
of the following
-
There is no need for General Anesthesia.
-
There is no need for blood transfusion.
-
Needs only a short hospitalisation.
-
No surgical scar.
-
Surgically unfit patients can also be operated endoscopically.
-
It has become a great boon for patients with cardiac & pulmonary diseases.
-
It is very cost-effective. Cost is only 50% of the open surgical cost.
Endoscopic Variceal Banding for esophageal varices is done to prevent
blood vomiting. Varices are blood vessels protruding into the
esophageal lumen due to pressure caused by liver diseases like
cirrhosis.
Sclerotherapy for esophageal varices is done to prevent blood vomiting
and bleeding duodenal ulcer.
Glue injection for fundal varices is done to prevent blood vomiting.
Glue, when injected into the blood vessels forms into a solid mass
and prevents any flow of blood and thus stops rupture of the vessels.
Foreign bodies like artificial dentures, coins, pins and needles are
normally the non-edible items that are swallowed by accident. These
can be removed endoscopically.
Colonoscopy is a procedure for diagnosing the abnormalities in the
large intestine. Colonic polyps can be removed by this procedure.
Tumerous growth in the large intestine can also be detected.
Jaundice caused by cancerous growth in the bile duct can be relieved
by inserting an artificial tube (stent) endoscopically. This has
revolutionised the management by avoiding a major open surgery.
Cancerous growth in the esophagus can block it and prevent food from
being swallowed. A metallic stent is endoscopically placed in the
esophagus. This immediately allows the patient to swallow food.
